After Space School

Many SSUK students go on to study Science or Engineering at University. Mention of attendance at a summer school in a student’s UCAS form shows initiative. After graduation Space School students have made careers working with NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency), in industry and doing research in university. A growing SSUK alumni now exists across the world.

A few individual cases of ex-Space School students:

  • Ruth Carley is currently studying Lunar magnetism for her PhD at the University of Edinburgh. She studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and has been an intern student at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, Houston Texas.
  • Loretta Hidalgo is now working for NASA as an Astrobiologist interested in life in extreme environments, environmental support-systems and the search for life in the universe. She is hoping to work on a human Mars Mission.
  • Sam McGauley was a member of the British team competing in the 2001 Space Olympiad in Korolev, Russia. He came to Space School UK in the August of that year to help prepare himself and his team members by networking with like minded people in all areas of the industry.
  • Caer McCabe, a past student of the University of Leicester, represented Space School UK at the Australian Space School and in Star City, Russia. She then went to Los Angeles to work on her PhD in Astrophysics and now works in the USA.
  • Mark Bentley used his space school industry day skills when he was part of the SSP'01 Project Team when he attended the International Space University . Their task was to identify monitoring of greenhouse gases. A micro-satellite constellation consisting of 3 identical spacecraft was proposed as a solution to this problem. Mark now works in the UK Space Sector.
  • Hazel McAndrews, Lucy Edge and Kotska Wallace have all been students supported by one of our major sponsors, QinetiQ, and have been employed by QinetiQ after graduation. Kotska is now working in The Netherlands at the European Space Agency.
  • David Thomas, who on his first visit to us in 2000 was one of our youngest students, is now going to follow a career in IT. David is at Cambridge University and has written a ICT interactive workshop for SSUK.
  • Michelle Skidmore and Charlotte Daymond are currently studying for degrees in Physics with Space Science and Technology at Leicester. Michelle is chair of the Leicester branch of UKSEDS.
